Nicotinamide is a vitamin that is found in many natural compounds. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties against the growth of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells and to promote the regeneration of skin tissue. Nicotinamide also has an antioxidative effect, which may be due to its binding to nuclear DNA. This vitamin prevents oxidation of proteins and nucleic acids by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nicotinamide is involved in the angiogenic process, which refers to the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. The drug nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a coenzyme in this process. NAD+ binds with ADP and ATP to form NADH and NADPH, which are used by enzymes to transfer electrons during oxidative phosphorylation reactions. Nicotinamide is synthesized from niacin, which inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase and prevents the conversion of ethanol into acetaldehyde.
