Symetine is a polymeric matrix implant that is used to enhance the growth of muscle cells. It consists of an alginic acid base and a fatty acid ester. The polymers are cross-linked by fatty acids and/or fatty alcohols, which are linked to the cellulose derivatives through ether bonds. Symetine enhances the growth of muscle cells in two ways: by providing a surface for cell attachment and by delivering synthetic proteins or diagnostic agents. Symetine is used as a pharmaceutical dosage form for the treatment of diseases such as muscular dystrophy and can be combined with other drugs to increase their effectiveness.
