The fluorescence probe can be used to determine the concentration of trifluoroacetic acid in solution. 2,5-Diphenylpyridine can also be used as a photophysical probe to study biochemical properties such as ester linkages. X-ray crystal structures have been determined for the 2,5-diphenylpyridine molecule in its free form and when bound to zinc ions. In addition, there are intermolecular hydrogen bonds present between the 2,5-diphenylpyridinium ion and other molecules that stabilize the structure. Crystallography studies show that this compound is dimeric in nature with an approximate molecular weight of 420 daltons.
