It has been shown to have properties similar to carbamates and to be an intermediate in the synthesis of a number of other compounds. 3-(4-Fluorophenyl)butanoic acid is used as an oral dosage form, which is converted into its active form (2-chloro-N-[3-(4-fluorophenyl)propionyl]acetamide). This drug has been shown to be effective for the treatment of reflux disease, with a lower incidence of side effects than some other drugs used for this purpose.
