It inhibits glyoxalase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of glyoxal and lysine residues, preventing the formation of advanced glycation end products. 3,5-Dimethylpyrazole-1-carboximidamide hydrochloride has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) replication with high specificity for the aminoguanidine (AGA) site on VSV RNA polymerase. The mechanism for this inhibition is not fully understood; however, it is thought to involve the primary amines on 3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-carboximidamide hydrochloride reacting with lysine residues on VSV RNA polymerase.
