3-Hydroxyundecanoic acid is a synthetic fatty acid that has been shown to have insecticidal properties. It can be synthesized in an efficient method, which involves the reaction of 3-hydroxyundecanal and acetic acid. 3-Hydroxyundecanoic acid has been shown to inhibit growth of gram-negative bacteria, such as Vibrio harveyi and Chromobacterium violaceum, and endophytic fungi such as Microsporum gypseum. The chemical structure of 3-hydroxyundecanoic acid is similar to that of fatty acids found in plants. This similarity may explain its inhibitory effect on plant physiology.
