Yatein is a diterpene, which is extracted from the acetate extract of the bark of the Chinese yew tree. It has been shown to have anti-cancer properties and is currently in use as an analytical method for a variety of organic compounds. Yatein has also been shown to have cytotoxic effects on skin cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to bind to DNA. Rubusoside, a natural compound found in plants, binds with Yatein and blocks the binding of this drug to DNA. This effect may be due to the excipients used in pharmaceuticals and polymers used in analytical methods that are added during processing. The biological studies on Yatein have primarily been done using erythromycin as a control or cupressaceae as a model organism.
