3-Ethoxy-4-methoxyphenol (EMPO) is a compound that belongs to the group of eicosanoids. It is synthesized from arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, by enzymes in the cell membrane. The synthesis of EMPO is stepwise and requires molecules such as hemocytes and photorhabdus. EMPO has been shown to have significant inhibitory activities against assays that measure immunosuppressive activities. 3-Ethoxy-4-methoxyphenol also inhibits the biosynthesis of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL1β, IL6, and TNFα.
