Tioconazole is a triazole antifungal agent that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of the cell membrane in fungi. It binds to the cytochrome P450 system and forms a ternary complex with the enzyme and its substrate. Tioconazole has been shown to have high activity against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium spp., and Bacillus subtilis. The drug also has been shown to be toxic to wild-type strains of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Aspergillus niger. Tioconazole is not active against other fungi such as Trichophyton spp., Microsporum canis, and Microsporum gypseum. Tioconazole has been shown to inhibit drug metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes. This inhibition may lead to increased levels of certain drugs
