Quilseconazole is an antifungal agent that belongs to the group of azoles. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to itraconazole, its active form. Quilseconazole inhibits the growth of fungi by inhibiting sterol C14-demethylase and blocking the synthesis of ergosterol, which is essential for cellular membranes. This drug also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to treat skin infections caused by fungi. The plasma concentration of quilseconazole can be increased by administering the drug as an emulsion or in dry powder form.
