Xanthohumol is a prenylflavonoid compound found in hops and beer. It has been shown to be an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by acting on their metabolic pathways. Xanthohumol has also been shown to have anticancer activity. This compound belongs to the category of natural compounds and is found in varying concentrations in plants such as pine trees, apples, oranges, blackberries, and grapes. Xanthohumol has been shown to inhibit tumor growth by inducing apoptosis. It does this by inhibiting protein synthesis, which leads to cell death by apoptosis pathway activation. Dose groups have also been studied for xanthohumol as an anticancer agent. The study showed that xanthohumol inhibited cancerous xenograft tumor growth when given at a dose group of 500 mg/kg/day or higher.
