MCB-3681 is a novel fluoroquinolone with a bifunctional mechanism of action that targets both the bacterial membrane and the bacterial efflux pump. It inhibits the protein targets involved in the synthesis and export of proteins, leading to cell death by inhibiting protein production. This molecule has been shown to be active against multidrug-resistant bacteria, including Gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. MCB-3681 has also been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are similar to those of ciprofloxacin, which suggests that it may be useful for treating infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
