MF498 is a guanylate kinase inhibitor. It has been shown to have potent antagonist activity against toll-like receptor 4 and 5, which are receptors that can be activated by bacterial products such as lipopolysaccharide. MF498 also inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, which are involved in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. MF498 has been shown to inhibit the matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) which is an enzyme that breaks down collagen in joints. The drug may be effective for treating conditions where the MMP-9 levels are elevated, such as osteoarthritis or chronic arthritis. MF498 has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of DNA and protein in cancer cells, leading to tumor cell death.
