The hydroxyl group of this compound reacts with epidermal growth factor, causing an increase in the number of liver cells that can cause cancer. Benz[A]anthracene-7-methanol also interacts with reactive oxygen species and stimulates the production of growth factors like epidermal growth factor, which promote skin cell growth. It has been shown that benz[A]anthracene-7-methanol promotes tumorigenesis in CD1 mice and induces tumor formation in rat liver microsomes.
