Phenyl Methanesulfonate is a sulfonation agent with potent anti-infective properties. It can inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Phenyl Methanesulfonate inhibits cell division by causing depolarization of the bacterial plasma membrane and preventing the synthesis of insulin in cells. This substance is used as a model system to study the mechanisms by which sulfonation agents affect cellular processes such as protein synthesis.
