Catechin pentaacetate is an amyloid-modulating flavonoid. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of amyloid fibrils by binding to alpha-synuclein and modulating its self-assembly into oligomers. Catechin pentaacetate also has a hepatoprotective effect, as it prevents the development of liver injury induced by bile acids in rats. This compound can also lower blood cholesterol levels, making it suitable for the treatment of hyperlipidaemia. Catechin pentaacetate is synthesized from catechins and acetaldehyde using a two-step process involving hydrolysis followed by decarboxylation. The enzyme expressed in Cryptomeria japonica is responsible for this synthesis.
