Potassium metaborate hydrate is a chemical compound that can be used as a crosslinking agent. It reacts with sodium carbonate to form a gel and increases the viscosity of the solution. This reaction also produces potassium carbonate, water, and heat. Potassium metaborate hydrate is used in sealants, adhesives, and coatings for paper products. The reaction is an exothermic one that requires heat to initiate the reaction. The product of this reaction is an equilibrium between two phases: the organic phase and the inorganic phase. The organic phase consists of potassium carbonate and potassium ions from the reactants; the inorganic phase consists of sodium ion, carbonate ion, bicarbonate ion, ammonium ion, calcium ion, magnesium ion, manganese ion, and zinc ion from sodium carbonate reactant as well as any metal ions present in the recycled material.
