2,3-Dichlorobiphenyl is a compound that has been classified as a probable human carcinogen. It is used in the production of sulfones and phosphorus pentoxide. 2,3-Dichlorobiphenyl is metabolized by hydrolysis of the sulfur group to form diphenyl sulfoxide (DPPS). DPPS is then hydrolyzed to biphenyl and methyl ethyl phenol. The major route of elimination for 2,3-dichlorobiphenyl is via urinary excretion.
2,3-Dichlorobiphenyl has been shown to have an effect on body mass index in infants when given at high doses in animal studies. This may be due to steric interactions between the compound and the enzyme CYP1A2, which produces an enzyme that breaks down 2,3-dichlorobiphenyl.
