2,5-Bis(methoxycarbonyl)-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone is a carbanion that has been shown to be an effective acceptor for the preparation of alkylidenemalonates. The reaction mechanism of this organometallic compound is believed to involve the formation of a carbocation at the β-position as well as C-C bond cleavage. 2,5-Bis(methoxycarbonyl)-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone also has been shown to undergo dehydrogenation with trimethylborane or sodium borohydride in the presence of amines or alcohols.
