Description:6α-Hydroxy-5α-cholestanol is a cholesterol metabolite that has been shown to circumvent the fluconazole resistance of Candida albicans. 6α-Hydroxy-5α-cholestanol, when derivatised with fluconazole, was able to permeate the lipid bilayer membrane and inhibit the growth of wild-type C. albicans, but not the fluconazole resistant strain. These results show that 6α-hydroxy-5α-cholestanol is an effective inhibitor of fungal growth and may be used as a therapeutic agent for Candida infections.
