5-Dimethylamino-2-nitrosophenol Hydrochloride is a chloride that is synthesised by the reaction of 5-dimethylamino-2-nitrophenol with hydrochloric acid. The product has a molecular weight of 222.12 and a melting point of 273°C. It is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether, but not in benzene or chloroform. This compound has been used as an indicator for the presence of chloride ion in solution. The quantum yield for this compound is 0.063 at wavelengths between 360 and 720 nm, when it absorbs light at 440 nm wavelength. It also has a cetyltrimethylammonium substitution group on its aliphatic chain (at the 2 position). The product is soluble in water, alcohols, and ethers but not in benzene or chloroform.
