It is an intermediate in the synthesis of peptidyl derivatives of azepanes, which are used as drugs for the treatment of hypertension. This drug has been shown to have a cerebral anti-ischemic effect by antagonizing endothelin and reducing intracranial pressure. Azepane-1-sulfonyl chloride may also be useful for the treatment of cerebral ischemia in humans.
