RO8191 is a small molecule that has been shown to inhibit replication of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in vitro and in vivo. RO8191 has also been shown to inhibit replication of human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer cells. In cellular systems, RO8191 inhibits the activity of cellular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) replicons, which are used as a model for HBV and HPV replication. The compound also inhibits the activity of replicons derived from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). In vivo, RO8191 inhibited viral load in mice infected with HBV.
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been shown to express high levels of RO8191's target enzyme, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1), suggesting that MSCs may be an effective delivery vehicle for this drug. This drug has not yet been evaluated for
