Tetra(2-naphthyl)benzidine (TNB) is a chemical compound that is used in radiation devices, such as smoke detectors. It is also used as a semiconductor material for electronic devices. The TNB molecule has two benzene rings with four nitrogen atoms connecting them. This compound can be synthesized by reacting aluminum oxide with chloride gas and then introducing the resulting liquid into a container filled with hydrogen fluoride and trifluoride gas. When heated, TNB decomposes to produce nitrous oxide and hydrogen fluoride. TNB has chemical stability up to 400°C and thermodynamic stability up to 500°C, making it a suitable choice for high-temperature applications.
