Semialactone is a saponin that is found in the roots of plants such as ganoderma lucidum and staphylococcus. It inhibits cholesterol acyltransferase and has an antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, which may be due to its inhibition of cholesterol synthesis. Semialactone is also an inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis, which may have an inhibitory effect on cardiac hypertrophy. The structural formula of semialactone is shown below:
