(+)-Oxanthromicin is a potent antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of anthrone antibiotics. It is a synthetic and semi-synthetic naphtoquinone that has been shown to inhibit the growth of malignant cells and non-malignant cells in vitro. The chemical structures of (+)-oxanthromicin are stereoisomers, which have different biological effects on bacterial membranes. (+)-Oxanthromicin binds to the plasma membrane, causing an increase in the concentration of peroxide at the site of binding. This leads to lipid peroxidation and cell death by apoptosis.
