JNJ 4796 is a synthetic antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections. It has been shown to be active against most strains of Staphylococcus, including methicillin-resistant strains, as well as many other Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. JNJ 4796 also has some activity against mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This drug also has antiviral and antifungal effects in vitro. JNJ 4796 belongs to the group of quinolones, which are potent inhibitors of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA by preventing strand breakage during replication. JNJ 4796 binds to the 16S ribosomal RNA in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
