Description:Sildenafil is the active ingredient in a prescription drug called Viagra. It is an inhibitor of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) and it is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil has been shown to be metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2C9 into N-desmethylsildenafil, which has lower affinity for PDE5 than sildenafil. The metabolism of sildenafil can also be inhibited by drugs that inhibit either CYP3A4 or CYP2C9, such as erythromycin, ketoconazole, and grapefruit juice.
