The present invention provides a novel compound, 3-methyl-4-phenyl-6H,7H-[1,2]oxazolo[3,4-d]pyridazin-7-one (MPOP), and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The MPOP is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). DHFR is an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate. Tetrahydrofolate is an essential cofactor in many biological reactions. As such, inhibition of DHFR leads to disruption of these reactions and inhibition of bacterial growth. The MPOP has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycob
