Fenpropidin is a fungicidal agent that belongs to the family of antimicrobial agents. It has been shown to be effective against resistant mutants, such as bacteria resistant to fenpropimorph. Fenpropidin is a prodrug that is activated by cleavage of the terminal propyl group by esterases found in the gastrointestinal tract. This activation leads to cell lysis and physiological effects, including changes in the abundance of inflammatory cytokines. Fenpropidin has been shown to be effective against bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, which are autoimmune diseases. It also inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are enzymes involved in inflammatory responses and tissue remodelling.
