It inhibits the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which is involved in hydration and the production of bicarbonate ions. 4-Hydroxymethylbenzenesulfonamide has been shown to be active against streptococci and cryptococcus neoformans, but not against bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
