Bismuth(III) 2-ethylhexanoate is a bismuth compound that has been synthesized as a nanowire. The synthesis of this compound was performed using decylphosphonic acid and polycarbonates to form the nanowires. The reaction mechanism for this synthesis process is not well understood, but it is believed that the electron microscopic morphology may provide some insight into how bismuth(III) 2-ethylhexanoate forms. In addition to the formation of individual nanowires, the reaction also produces carbonyl groups and tri-n-octylphosphine oxide, which are used in heterostructures. These heterostructures can be used for uv irradiation and have morphologies that can be studied by 13c-nmr spectroscopy.
