Glyasperin A is a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties that is isolated from the roots of Glycyrrhiza species. It has been shown to have anti-proliferative effects in rat cardiomyocytes and in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. This active form of glyasperin A inhibits protein synthesis and causes cardiac hypertrophy. The mechanism of action seems to be related to the inhibition of tyrosinase activity, which is an enzyme involved in the production of melanin, as well as a possible interaction with the epithelial mesenchymal transition signaling pathway. This compound also inhibits tyrosine phosphorylation in Hk-2 cells and suppresses the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process by inhibiting EMT markers such as CDH1, CDH2, VIM, N-cadherin, and β-catenin.
