Description:
Thienamycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of thiazolyl penicillin derivatives. It can be synthesized in high yield by reacting cysteamine with hydrochloric acid and 4-dimethylaminopyridine. Thienamycin has been used as a catalyst for the synthesis of imipenem, which is a broad-spectrum β-lactam antibiotic. The cyclization of thienamycin generates a number of byproducts, such as 4-dimethylaminopyrimidine hydrochloride and nitrobenzene.
