Daphniphyllum paxiphyllum is a plant that has been used in traditional medicine from the time of Hippocrates. Paxiphylline E, extracted from the leaves of this plant, has cytotoxic effects on tumor cell lines and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in endothelial cells. The cytotoxic activity was determined using spectroscopic methods and cell line experiments. This extract was found to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in culture by interfering with their ability to synthesize proteins necessary for their survival. Paxiphylline E also inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins in endothelial cells.
