It is a hardener in liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, and has been used to increase the hardness of epoxy resin in coatings for plastic. 5-Iodofuran-2-carboxylic acid inhibits the serotonin transporter (SERT), which is responsible for the reuptake of serotonin from the synaptic cleft. This inhibition leads to increased extracellular concentrations of serotonin, which can result in serotonergic side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and headache.
