It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme phosphodiesterase (PDE), which breaks down cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). 6,7-Dichloro-2,3-dihydro-1H-indole-2,3-dione inhibits PDE and increases the concentration of cAMP in cells.
