Thiophene-2,3-dicarbonitrile is a colorant that has a macrocyclic structure. This compound has been shown to be an age-related macular degeneration (AMD) risk factor. It may also be a risk factor for retinal detachment and optic neuropathy. The carboxylic acid groups in this compound make it soluble in water and the amino groups give it an amine odor. Thiophene-2,3-dicarbonitrile can be synthesized from naphthalene and nitroethane through the reaction of dithionite with thiophenes.
