BDE No 153 is a brominated flame retardant that has been shown to have genotoxic effects in experimental models. These effects are caused by the inhibition of protein genes, as well as the inhibition of intracellular calcium concentration and mitochondrial membrane potential. BDE No 153 also causes toxicity in humans, with adverse effects on body mass index and adipose tissue. The chemical is found in human serum and can be detected in human blood samples. It is also found in fatty tissues and congener studies indicate that it can cause cancer.
