Magnolignan C is a phenylpropanoid glycoside found in Magnolia officinalis. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and other viruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 1 and human cytomegalovirus. It may also have antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. This compound has been shown to induce apoptosis of microglia cells, which are immune cells in the central nervous system. The mechanism by which it induces apoptosis is unknown but may be due to its structural similarity to biphenyl, a preservative that has been linked to sclerosis.
