2,3-Dihydroxypropyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is a hydrolysis product of the parabens and is an intermediate in the synthesis of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The transesterification reaction involved in this process requires glycerol as a byproduct. The chemical stability of 2,3-Dihydroxypropyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has been evaluated using spectroscopy to determine if it can be used as a medicinal preparation. The hydrolysis of this compound occurs at pH values between 6 and 8, with a half-life of 1.2 hours at pH 7.5 and 50°C. This compound is stable when heated to 100°C for 10 minutes or when subjected to light for 3 hours. It also shows no mutagenicity under conditions that induce gene mutation in bacteria (Ames test).
