Isochamaejasmine is a natural product that is extracted from the Chinese herb Isochamaejasminum. It has been shown to have anti-tuberculosis and anti-leukemia effects. The anti-tuberculosis effect may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids in mycobacteria. Isochamaejasmine also inhibits the activation of caspase 9, which leads to apoptosis in leukemia cells. The acetate extraction process is used for producing this compound by extracting it from Isochamaejasminum. This extract can be purified using chromatographic methods such as gel chromatography or phase chromatography, and then converted into an active form by asymmetric synthesis with diethyl malonate and sodium borohydride. This compound can also be synthesized chemically by reacting acetyl chloride with phenylacetic acid followed by hydrolysis of the ester group.
