Eriosematin is a natural product that has potent antimycobacterial activity. It inhibits the growth of mycobacteria by interfering with the synthesis of essential cell wall components, such as arabinogalactan and lipoarabinomannan. Eriosematin also inhibits protease activity and may be effective against diarrhoea-causing bacteria. Preliminary experiments have shown that eriosematin is able to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 in both intestinal and macrophage cells. The minimum effective dose for eriosematin is not yet known.
