This molecule has been used to induce tumor xenografts in mice with cancer, which can be detected using an antigen detection assay. It has also been shown that 4-azidobutyrate-N-hydroxysuccinimide ester reacts with functional groups on proteins and nucleic acids during its synthesis into DNA, which may lead to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
