Product Information

Name:
BMS-303141
Description:

BMS-303141 is a fatty acid that inhibits the uptake of iron by macrophages and may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, and muscle diseases. BMS-303141 has been shown to inhibit autophagy in prostate cancer cells in vitro and to reduce hepcidin expression. Autophagy is an important process for maintaining cellular homeostasis. It involves the degradation of cytoplasmic components through lysosomes, which are membrane-bound structures found in most animal cells. Autophagy is activated during periods of starvation or when the cell is infected with a virus or bacterium and needs to eliminate the intracellular pathogen. Hepcidin is a hormone produced by the liver that regulates iron homeostasis by inhibiting erythropoiesis (the production of red blood cells) and mobilizing iron stores from macrophages into circulation.
