Polycytidylic acid is a nucleoside analogue that inhibits viral replication by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase. It has been shown to inhibit the production of colony-stimulating factor (CSF), which is essential for the growth and differentiation of cells in culture. Polycytidylic acid has also been shown to have antiviral resistance, inhibitory properties, and receptor activity. The virus must be able to bind to the surface of the cell before it can infect it; polycytidylic acid prevents this from happening by blocking receptors on the cell membrane. Polycytidylic acid is not toxic to human cells at sublethal doses, but is toxic at higher concentrations. It may interfere with physiological function, including Toll-like receptor signaling pathways.
