Description:
2,4-Dibromopentane is a polymerizable monomer that can be used in the production of polymers. It can be made by introducing a bromine atom into pentane using electrolysis. In order to make this product, argon gas is introduced into a solution of 2,4-dibromopentane and acetonitrile. The reaction can then be catalyzed by irradiation or by a catalyst such as platinum. The product is an equimolar mixture of the two stereoisomers, which are mirror images of each other. The stereoisomers can be separated by vibrational spectroscopy or by chromatography on silica gel.
