Product Information
2-Iodo-2-methylpropionitrile is a reactive compound that can be used to terminate polymerization reactions. It reacts with radicals, such as those generated by the photolysis of cyanoalkyl methacrylates, to form a stable radical species. The rate at which this reaction occurs is dependent on the concentration of 2-iodo-2-methylpropionitrile and the intensity of light. The mechanism for this reaction has been investigated using imidazopyridine monomers and phosphonate monomers as control experiments. Results show that the rate of termination is due to an electrophilic addition mechanism involving a radical species derived from an excited state methacrylate. This chemical also has been shown to be useful for radiation sterilization in control experiments where it was found to increase the efficiency of irradiation.
