3-Epicabraleadiol is a carotenoid that is found in the leaves of the japonica subspecies of the Brassica genus. It has been shown to have anticancer activity and chemopreventive effects against carcinogenesis. 3-Epicabraleadiol inhibits cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis, or programmed cell death. 3-Epicabraleadiol also inhibits tumor angiogenesis, which is the development of new blood vessels within tumors. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has shown that 3-epicabradiol prevents cancer cells from absorbing glucose, which may be due to its inhibitory effect on the uptake of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) by cancer cells.
