It inhibits the synthesis of DNA by chemically binding to the enzyme that catalyzes the formation of pyrimidine nucleosides from uridine, thereby preventing RNA and DNA synthesis. 6-Methyl-3-(β-D-2-ribofuranosyl)pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidin-2-one also reversibly binds to the template strand of dna and prevents replication. This drug is effective in treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
